Gewurztraminer, Domaine Haegi, Alsace
In Alsace they write Gewurztraminer, in German speaking countries it is Gewürztraminer. Gewürz means herb, the grape is so named because of its highly aromatic smell and taste. Think of roses, peach, mango, lychee, honey, thyme, caramel, the list goes on. Thanks to the somewhat reddish hue of the ripe grapes it is also called Roter Traminer.
And that traminer in the name? Traminer is the original grape. Gewurztraminer is a natural mutation. Traminer probably originates from the Jura in France. There it is (usually) called Savagnin. Here you will mainly find the variety Savagnin blanc or Gelber Traminer. Via Switzerland, both Gewurztraminer and Traminer also ended up in Germany, Austria and Northern Italy. Now you can also find it in Spain and Australia. Other names for Traminer are Heida and Klevner.
