D.O. Tierra de Leon, emerging wine region

This relatively recent D.O. (2005) is located between the wine regions of Bierzo and Toro, just south of the city of León. Tierra de León unites three smaller wine regions. The vineyards are mainly located on plateaus of approximately 800m. The alluvial soil is poor, but contains minerals and lime.

In summer it is really hot. But due to the altitude and the rather northern location within Spain, it cools down significantly at night. This is precisely what creates that beautiful acidity. The winters are also cold. With only 500mm of rain per year, it is relatively dry.

Wine has been made here for centuries. In the historic town of Valdevimbre, there are old hand-dug caves where wine is still stored. Some caves now also house charming restaurants that attract enthusiasts from the wider region.

Winery Pardevalles

Just outside Valdevimbre is the winery of Pardevalles. They make arguably the best wines of Tierra de León. In Tierra de León, winemakers mainly work with two local grape varieties. So Prieto Picudo for red and rosé and Albarin for white. Do try that Albarin too!
