Orange wine / orange wine
Orange wine is white wine made like red wine. The grapes float in the juice during fermentation. The skins and pips contain tannins. Tannins taste bitter and give a rough mouthfeel. Orange wine can be just as rough as red wine!
The orange colour is caused by the oxidative fermentation of the wine. Colourants from the skins turn orange due to oxygen. The winemaker often uses a large earthenware amphora. This is breathable.
Natural wine
Natural wine means that the winemaker does not actually do anything at all when making the wine. The must mistaken spontaneously and there is little or no intervention. Usually no sulphite is added. After all, the wine is already oxidized. The winemaker must work extremely cleanly to prevent the wine from turning into vinegar.
Natural and orange wines have their own unique taste . The fruitiness usually disappears due to oxidation. Orange wines have more nutty and/or sherry-like flavours. This can often make them look similar and the grape is usually no longer recognisable. Nevertheless, they can be beautiful wines.
