Gewurztraminer, Domaine Haegi, Alsace

In Alsace, they write Gewürztraminer, in German-speaking countries it's Gewürztraminer. Gewürz means herb, and the grape is so named for its intensely aromatic aroma and flavor. Think roses, peaches, mangoes, lychees, honey, thyme, caramel, and so on. Thanks to the slightly reddish hue of the ripe grapes, it's also called Roter Traminer.

And what about that " Traminer" in the name? Traminer is the original grape. Gewürztraminer is a natural mutation. Traminer likely originated in the Jura region of France, where it's (usually) called Savagnin. Here, you'll mainly find the Savagnin blanc or Gelber Traminer varieties. Via Switzerland, both Gewürztraminer and Traminer also reached Germany, Austria, and northern Italy. Now you can also find it in Spain and Australia, among other places. Other names for Traminer include Heida and Klevner.
