Marta Soares and Antonio, winemakers of Casal Figueira, DO Lisboa, Portugal

DO Lisboa: pioneers in biodynamics

Marta Soares and her husband Antonio began as pioneers in biodynamic viticulture around the turn of the millennium, with a wine estate of 13 hectares of vineyards near Vermelha, about 80 km north of Lisbon. Everything is biodynamic, with low yields and respect for the terroir.

Antonio did the work in the vineyards and cellars; Marta helped out whenever she could, as she is primarily an artist and teacher. A remarkable duo with a clear vision.

Biodynamic and unconventional

Casal Figueira is based in the DO Lisboa, the large wine region north of the Portuguese capital along the Atlantic coast. The ocean breeze ensures cool nights and a long growing season—ideal for expressive, aromatic wines. The style is fresh, mineral, and far removed from the heavy, concentrated Portuguese wine style.

Indigenous varieties at the forefront

Indigenous Portuguese grape varieties take center stage—authentic, terroir-driven, and unexpected.
