Malat Winery, Kremstal, Austria

Weingut Malat is one of the oldest and best wineries in Austria. The Malat family has been making wine for over 10 generations in Kremstal, on the southern bank of the Danube in the village of Palt. Today, the young Michael Malat is in charge. You will find his wines on the lists of top restaurants all over the world.
Kremstal: between Wachau and Kamptal
Kremstal is located on the border of the Wachau and the Kamptal, in Lower Austria. Malat's vineyards are situated on loess soils (fertile loamy soil), which give the wines their characteristic depth, fine acidity, and rich flavor. Some of the wines officially fall under the Wachau DAC, while most are under the Kremstal DAC.
Grüner Veltliner & Riesling
The crown jewels of Malat are its Grüner Veltliner wines. Top versions like the Gottschelle Reserve and the Höhlgraben are among the absolute best in Austria — full, rich, and endlessly long. Hamersma gave the Höhlgraben a 9. Falstaff and Vinaria are consistently full of praise for Michael Malat.
The Riesling Furth comes from 20-year-old vines on loess soil near the village of Furth / Palt. Finely ripe white fruit, tension, and rich flavor — classic Kremstal Riesling.
Pinot Noir
In addition to the top whites, Malat also produces impressive Pinot noir (Ried Satzen and Satzen Reserve) — a style that is receiving increasing attention in Austria.
