Matthias Gaul Winery, Palatinate, Germany

Matthias Gaul is one of the most promising winemakers in the Pfalz. His vineyards are located around the village of Asselheim in the North Pfalz, on stony and calcareous soils that deepen the flavors. He wins one award after another: Newcomer of the Year at Eichelmann, a consistent winner at Perswijn, and highly praised by Vinum and Falstaff.
Burgundian-style Pinot Noir
Gaul consciously calls his wine Pinot Noir instead of Spätburgunder—to emphasize the Burgundian style. Elegant cherry fruit, damp earth, soft tannins. Delicious now, but certainly capable of aging for years to come.
Scheurebe: the Sauvignon Blanc of Germany
Scheurebe is a cross between Riesling and Silvaner from 1916. In Gaul's hands: tropical and fresh with peach, pineapple, melon, and citrus. Only 11.5% alcohol—the bottle will be empty before you know it!
Gaul wines at Lekker Sapje
- Pinot Noir — classic, elegant style. Great value for money.
- Pinot Noir Asselheim — single-village Pinot Noir from the Ried Asselheim.
- Gaul’s Eleven Scheurebe — fresh, tropical, low in alcohol.
