The longest river, the richest wine region
The Loire is France's longest river, and the wine region of the same name is one of the most diverse in the world. Stretching over 1,000 kilometers from the Atlantic coast deep into the interior, the region boasts an enormous variety of soils, climates, and grape varieties. And, of course, Loire wines.
Loire wines: the wine regions of the Loire
The Loire encompasses dozens of appellations, each with its own character. The best-known Loire wines are:
- Muscadet — on the Atlantic coast, fresh and briny, perfect with oysters
- Anjou — versatile, offering dry whites as well as rosés and reds
- Coteaux du Layon — sweet Chenin Blancs made from botrytized grapes
- Savennières — dry Chenin Blanc, taut and mineral, one of the great white wines of France
- Saumur — both white and red, as well as sparkling wines made from Chenin Blanc
- Saumur-Champigny — elegant Cabernet Franc grown on tufa limestone
- Bourgueil and Saint-Nicolas-de-Bourgueil — fruity, accessible Cabernet Franc
- Chinon — the most famous red Loire appellation, complex and long-lived
- Vouvray — Chenin Blanc in all styles: dry, off-dry, sweet, and sparkling
- Montlouis-sur-Loire — the younger sibling of Vouvray, with increasingly recognized quality
- Touraine — broad and accessible, featuring Sauvignon Blanc, Gamay, and Cabernet Franc
- Cheverny and Cour-Cheverny — home to the rare Romorantin grape
- Menetou-Salon — elegant Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Noir
- Quincy and Reuilly — dry Sauvignon Blancs, often underestimated
- Sancerre — world-famous for its mineral Sauvignon Blanc and light Pinot Noir
- Pouilly-Fumé — the great rival of Sancerre, smoky and complex
The great grape varieties of the Loire
The Loire has something for everyone. Chenin Blanc is the queen of the region: versatile, long-lived, and capable of both dry and sweet greatness. Sauvignon Blanc finds its home in Sancerre and Pouilly-Fumé. Cabernet Franc creates light, elegant red wines in Chinon and Bourgueil. And Muscadet, made from the Melon de Bourgogne grape, is the wine of the Atlantic coast — fresh, salty, and perfect with oysters.
Savennières: the absolute pinnacle
For those who want to dive deep into Loire wines: Savennières is one of the most impressive dry white wines in France. Made from Chenin Blanc on schist soils along the Loire, the best Savennières are taut and mineral in their youth, but develop into complex, long-lived wines with notes of quartz, beeswax, and dried fruit.
Coteaux du Layon and Vouvray: sweet yet fresh
The Loire is also the domain of magnificent sweet wines. Coteaux du Layon and Vouvray moelleux, both made from Chenin Blanc, combine intense sweetness with a vibrant acidity that keeps everything in balance. They can age for decades and become more fascinating with every passing year.
