Wine and cheese: a classic duo

Wine and cheese are natural allies — both fermented, both driven by terroir, both endlessly varied. Yet the combination is far from always a perfect match. A few basic rules will get you a long way.

Goat cheese: choose fresh and mineral

Goat cheese and fresh white wine are a perfect match. The tanginess of the cheese pairs well with a wine of lively acidity. Choose a Savennières or Muscadet from the Loire, or a dry Jurançon sec from our Jurançon collection. Avoid heavy, oak-aged white wines — they overpower the delicate flavour of the cheese.

Soft cheeses and bloomy rind cheeses: Pinot Noir or Chardonnay

Creamy, soft cheeses such as Brie and Camembert call for a wine that is not too tannic. A light Pinot Noir from Burgundy or a full-bodied Chardonnay without too much oak works perfectly. For bloomy rind cheeses such as the intense Époisses or the rich Brillat-Savarin, it is best to choose a rich, full-bodied Chardonnay. Or a slightly sweet white wine. The creaminess and the piquant rind call for something with body and a touch of sweetness.

Hard cheeses (Comté, Gruyère): Jura or Chardonnay

Hard, nutty cheeses are a natural partner for wines from the Jura. A Chardonnay ‘ouillé’ from Tissot or Labet is a perfect match for Comté. They share the same nutty, mineral notes. For the ultimate combination: try a Vin Jaune with an aged Comté. Legendary.

Blue cheese (Roquefort, Gorgonzola): sweet or powerful red

The intensity of blue cheese calls for a wine that can stand up to it. A sweet Jurançon or a powerful red wine from the Languedoc holds its own. The sweetness tempers the saltiness of the cheese, while the intensity of the red can handle the strong flavour.

The golden rule

Wine and cheese from the same region almost always pair well together. That is no coincidence — they have been developed together over the centuries. Jura wine with Jura cheese is the textbook example: think of a Vin Jaune with Comté, a Chardonnay ouillée with Morbier, or a Poulsard with Bleu de Gex. Terroir brings them together.
