Chasselas, is it any good?

Chasselas is mainly found in Alsace, Baden (as Gutedel), Switzerland (as Fendant). It normally produces neutral wines. But as you also see with Macabeo and Trebbiano, in the right hands, Chasselas yields astonishingly beautiful wine. The appellation within Savoie is called IGP Vin des Allobroges. Now you know!

Les Vignes de Paradis

Winemaker Dominique Lucas of Les Vignes de Paradis - nomen est omen - cultivates his 12 hectares of cooler west-facing (and beautiful) vineyards biodynamically. The poor soil of glacial moraines (till, granite) with lots of calcareous sandstone ensures beautiful fruit.

Perfectly ripe grapes

The grapes are harvested in stages (tries), always at perfect ripeness. This white wine from vineyards near Crèpy also comes from the best, oldest vines with low yields. The juice ferments and matures for 6 months in egg-shaped concrete vats.
These concrete vats are becoming increasingly common; they allow some air to pass through, impart no flavour (unlike wood), and their shape is said to create an internal fluid dynamic that produces finer wine. Duly noted.

More information about this delicious juice

Taste
This Chasselas has a delicate nose but also immediately shows power. It starts subtly mineral but then beautifully unfolds with tension from sublime acids and bitters. Stone fruit and wet stone. Long!

Delicious with
White fish, charcuterie, vegetable dishes with endive, artichoke, fennel, asparagus, kale, savory, chervil.

Interesting
Chasselas is not exactly known for interesting wine. In Alsace, you're not even allowed to plant it anymore. But in the right hands, it produces beautiful wine. Like this one.
