French Crémants are becoming increasingly popular. Like Champagne, they undergo a second fermentation in the bottle. Crémants from Burgundy and the Loire are quite well-known. But you can also find beautiful ones in the Jura region. And sometimes very beautiful ones. Like this Brut Nature 'Les Turbulents' from Domaine Labet .
Biodynamic wine, without sulphites.
Labet, legendary winery from the Jura
Domaine Labet, located in Rotalier in the southern Jura region ( Sud-Révermont ), is one of the finest Jura wine producers . This small wine region, east of Burgundy, is relatively unknown. Yet, it boasts a rich, long history and winemaking tradition. Today, Jura wines, especially those from the finest winemakers, are highly sought after worldwide .
Jura, a wine region rich in tradition
The Jura is a relatively small wine region: approximately 2,000 hectares. Yet it boasts a very old winemaking tradition, with a wide variety of styles. The traditional style is oxidative, more or less like that of sherry and Madeira. In such cases, the label often says "Tradition."
The wine barrels are not filled to the brim to allow for airflow. A yeast membrane forms on the wine, the " voile " (veil). But unlike sherry and Madeira, this wine is not fortified with wine alcohol in the Jura. These traditional Jura wines have a distinctive flavor, with walnut and hazelnut, as well as chamomile, curry, and other herbs . Delicious!
Labet is close to nature
Sulfites? No way. Dosage is blasphemy. Commerce is secondary. Domaine Labet used to make wines in the classic style. These days, they're increasingly making natural wine (which is actually even more classic, of course). Their specialty is Chardonnay.
Julien, Romain, and their sister Charline also make small quantities of wine from other typical Jura grapes: Vin Jaune from Savagnin (Traminer). And reds from Trousseau, Poulsard, and Pinot Noir. These red wines from Domaine Labet are very rare. Light and pale, yet very refined.
Father Alain Labet was one of the first in the Jura to vinify old parcels of Chardonnay separately and in the Burgundian style, to showcase the terroir differences as much as possible. However, the maturation process is different from Burgundy: no new oak is used. Instead, casks and all barriques have been in use for at least four years. The wines also often age for a long time: 12 to 18 months, or even longer, is quite common.
In 2012, Alain handed over the reins to his children – son Julien, sister Charline, and brother Romain. They immediately took the initiative. Labet now operates entirely organically, with a separate biodynamic and vin nature line. Julien learned his trade at Domaine Ramonet in Chassagne-Montrachet and Hamilton Russell Winery in South Africa (both excellent wineries).
Labet has several vineyards with very old Chardonnay vines , some over 100 years old. Very low yields produce spectacular wines with great concentration, precision, and minerality. These wines also age exceptionally well, like the best white Burgundies.
Labet wines are highly renowned and sought-after worldwide , and are primarily sold by allocation. While supplies last!
