Labet, legendary winery from the Jura

Domaine Labet from Rotalier , in the south of the Jura (Sud-Révermont) is one of the best Jura wine producers . This small wine region, east of Burgundy, is relatively unknown. But it has a rich, long history and wine tradition. Today, Jura wines, especially from the better winemakers, are very popular worldwide .

Jura, a wine region rich in tradition

The Jura is a relatively small wine region: around 2000 ha. Yet it has a very old tradition of wine making. Even with a great variety of styles. The traditional style is oxidative, more or less as known from sherry and madeira. It often says 'Tradition' on the label.
The wine barrels are not filled to the brim, so that air can get in. A film of yeast forms on the wine: the ' voile '. (veil). But unlike sherry and madeira, this wine is not fortified with wine alcohol in the Jura. These traditional Jura wines have a distinct taste of their own, with walnut, hazelnut but also camomile, curry and other herbs . Delicious!

Labet is close to nature

Sulphite? No way. Dosage is blasphemy. Commerce is secondary. Domaine Labet used to make wines in the classic style. Nowadays more and more natural wine (actually that is even more classic of course). Their speciality is Chardonnay.
In addition, Julien, Romain and sister Charline make small quantities of wine from other typical Jura grapes. Vin Jaune from Savagnin (Traminer). And for red from Trousseau, Poulsard and Pinot Noir. Those red wines from Domaine Labet are very rare. Light and pale, but very refined.

The father Alain Labet was one of the first in the Jura to vinify old parcels of Chardonnay separately and in a Burgundian way. To show the differences in terroir as much as possible. However, the upbringing is different from that in Burgundy: no new wood. But casks, and all barriques have been used for at least 4 years. The wines also often mature for a long time: 12 to 18 months or even longer is quite normal.

Alain handed over the baton to his children in 2012 - besides son Julien, sister Charline and brother Romain. They immediately took steps. Labet now works entirely organically with a separate line of biodynamic and vin nature. Julien learned at Domaine Ramonet in Chassagne-Montrachet and Hamilton Russell Winery in South Africa (both very good wineries).
Labet has some vineyards with very old Chardonnay vines , some over 100 years old. Very low yields produce spectacular wines . With a lot of concentration, precision and minerality. They can also age very well, like the best white Burgundies.

Labet wines are world-renowned and sought-after, and are mainly sold on allocation.
