Mencia, typical red wine for Bierzo
In the DO Bierzo, Mencia is the typical local grape for red wine.  This Pago de Valdoneje is a young, unaged wine, made from old vines. It's also wonderfully fruity, but not as one-dimensional as many "joven" wines.
This red wine is soft and full-bodied. It also has a very intriguing aroma. The palate is captivating, long, fresh, and quite complex, thanks to those old vines. It's somewhat reminiscent of Cabernet Franc . So, lovely red fruit, good acidity, refined tannins. It's also quite filling. And a remarkably layered flavor palette. A remarkably beautiful glass. But not for the money!
Produced under the supervision of renowned winemaker Raul Perez, Parker rates it 91/100.
Viños Valtuille is a small, 11-hectare winery that produces quality Mencia wines on a small scale. The vineyards are between 50 and 100 years old. Winemaker and owner Marcos García Alba receives help and advice from childhood friend and fellow villager Raul Pérez. Raul Pérez is a renowned winemaker who produces some of Spain's most sought-after (and expensive) wines under his own name.
