Zweigelt Olivin, Winkler-Hermaden, volcanic wine

A beautiful Zweigelt, an organic dry red wine from Austria. Named after olivine , an olive-green mineral found in the volcanic soil here, this wine has become a true cult wine from Winkler-Hermaden in Vulkanland-Steiermark, in the far southeastern corner of Austria. The estate—more like a castle, with a hotel and restaurant—is situated atop an ancient volcano. Surrounded by vineyards and their own oak forests, they also make their own wine barrels from these.

The volcanic soil contains olivine, a soft, olive-green semi-precious stone. This wine is named after it. Incidentally, ground olivine is also used to capture CO2.

Zweigelt is a cross between Blaufränkisch and Sankt Laurent, two indigenous Austrian grape varieties.
