Description
Zweigelt, Winkler-Hermaden, Vulkanland-Styria, Austria . An exceptionally good Zweigelt. With full aromas and flavors of cherries, spices, leather, and a touch of tobacco. A beautifully ripe style, reminiscent of Gamay. Still quite firm in tannins yet also light on the palate. Matured in oak from their own forests. A truly beautiful Zweigelt wine. Organic dry red wine from Austria, from the Winkler-Hermaden winery.
Dry red Austrian wine comes from the heavenly wine region of Vulkanland-Steiermark . It lies in the far southeast of Austria and borders Hungary and Croatia. The Winkler-Hermaden winery is situated atop an ancient volcano. The vineyards are situated on the slopes, some even further afield. The soil is therefore volcanic and rich in minerals such as olivine .
Organic wine . Winkler-Hermaden only releases this red wine after two years of aging.
Zweigelt is a cross between the typical Austrian grape varieties Blaufränkisch and St. Laurent. Also known as Rotburger, it was bred by Fritz Zweigelt at the Wine Institute in Klosterneuburg near Vienna in 1922.
