Biodynamic Riesling, low-intervention wine
This small 4-hectare estate is located in Kröv on the Mosel and chooses a pure, low-intervention approach, with great attention to biodiversity. Due to the small scale, much of the work is done by hand and production is limited.
Weingut Gerhard Trossen, Mosel
The steep vineyards are located around Kröv, including the cru sites of Kröver Letterlay and Steffensberg. The vineyards are typical for the Mosel, with predominantly poor slate soils. The Riesling vines and wine grapes are cultivated and harvested by hand.
Since son Lucas took over daily management, new steps have been taken. The estate operates biodynamically. In the cellar, Lucas Trossen uses both stainless steel tanks and large barrels of neutral wood. The wines undergo malolactic fermentation (making acids softer) and are barely filtered. Very little sulfite is used as well. Furthermore, he allows the wines to age on the lees for as long as possible.
The result is a recognizable style of pure, soft, and refined Rieslings. They are generous and accessible, yet at the same time exciting and distinctive, in both dry and (off-)dry versions.
