Volcanic white wine
Verdelho o Original is a native variety from the Azores and Madeira. It's therefore different from the Verdelho from mainland Portugal. This Verdelho is "the Original." Wines from these volcanic islands are characterized by freshness, saltiness, minerality, and unique aromas.
Vinification: Strict selection of only the finest Verdelho grapes, hand-harvested in small 20kg baskets. Whole-cluster pressing, with stems still attached. This is followed by 12 hours of maceration. Fermentation is then carried out in large 600-1000L wooden barrels. Maturation: 10 months on fine lees, followed by a further 48 months in bottle.
Azores Wine Company
The Azores Wine Company is a collaboration between the renowned Douro winery Maçanita, owned by Antonio Maçanita, Filipe Rocha, and Paulo Machado of Insula Vinus. They have saved ancient Azorean grape varieties like Verdelho, Arinto dos Açores , and Terrantez do Pico from extinction.
