Verdelho o Original, Azores Wine Company, Azores . White wine from Verdelho, DO Pico, Azores. And wine from volcanic soil. Bizarrely beautiful wine from the middle of the Atlantic Ocean, from the Azores island of Pico .

This Verdelho has tropical fruit, pineapple and passion fruit. But also fine saltiness and fresh acids. Ideal partner for oysters and other shellfish. Also goes very well with grilled fish and salads.

Volcanic white wine

Verdelho o Original is an indigenous variety of the Azores and Madeira. So different from the Verdelho of mainland Portugal. This Verdelho is "the Original". Characteristic of wines from these volcanic islands are freshness, saltiness, minerality and unique aromas.

Vinification: strict selection of only the best Verdelho grapes, manual harvest in small baskets of 20kg. Whole bunch pressing, so with stalks. Then 12 hours of maceration. Then fermentation in large wooden barrels of 600-1000L. Maturation: 10 months on fine lees. And another 48 months in bottle.

Azores Wine Company

The Azores Wine Company is a collaboration between the famous Douro winery Maçanita of Antonio Maçanita, Filipe Rocha and Paulo Machado of Insula Vinus. They have saved ancient grape varieties from the Azores such as Verdelho, Arinto dos Açores and Terrantez do Pico from extinction.
