2021: very small harvest, very classic year (back to the seventies)

The year 2021 was particularly challenging for the winemakers in Burgundy. Due to catastrophic frost in early spring and a wet and cool season. Roughly half of the harvest was lost. Chardonnay in the Côte de Beaune was even 80 percent less!
In this respect, 2021 is reminiscent of the seventies when fresh, wet years were normal. Extreme frost on April 5 also heralded a time of even more frost and snow, just when the buds were coming out and the vines were at their weakest.
Some vineyards were completely black after a few weeks. A sight the current generation had never experienced. July and August were dry and warmer, but 2021 is similar to 2016, also a year with spring frost.

What this small harvest does to the price is easy to guess...
