Priorat, with Rioja the only DOQ in Spain
Priorat - in Spanish Priorato - is named after a priory (monastery) that used to stand here. The wine region is inhospitable with a nitrogen-poor, hard stony soil full of minerals (mica schist). So this is the famous Llicorella soil. Llicorella gives Priorat wines a nice mineral touch.
But because quite a lot of wine is made in a robust and over the top thick style, you don't always notice that minerality. With the wines of Clos Galena, on the other hand, you do. All their wines have a beautiful elegance due to fine acidity and mineral notes. Galena is the local name for a silvery mineral that was mined in local mines.
Denominacion d'Origen Qalficada
In Spanish wine regions, DO always stands for the name: Denominacion d'Origen. Only Rioja and Priorat are allowed to put DOQ in front of it: Denominacion d'Origen Qalficada.
