Elbling, ancient grape variety
Elbling is a white grape. It is the oldest wine grape in Europe. And planted by the Romans more than 2000 years ago in the wine region of the Mosel. The name Elbling is derived from the Latin Alba, which means white.
Until the Middle Ages, Elbling was the most common grape in Germany. But from the 17th century onwards, Elbling was increasingly replaced by Riesling and Silvaner. This productive grape produces a dry, sparkling, fresh white wine with relatively low alcohol. And is also perfectly suited for making Sekt, or sparkling wine.
Elbling has an acidity comparable to that of Riesling. But then somewhat softer and rounder. It is processed into fresh, neutral wine or into sekt. Pure, 100% Elbling is a rarity. Most production disappears into sekt from other grapes. This wine from Frieden-Berg is therefore very special!
