Terrantez do Pico, Azores Wine Company

The Azores belong to Portugal and therefore also to the EU. These volcanic islands are situated on the Atlantic Rift , an undersea ridge in the Atlantic Ocean. It meanders north to south across the globe, passing Iceland and various islands in the South Atlantic Ocean.

It's essentially a massive crack in the Earth's tectonic plates. Lava flows almost continuously from here, and super-hot water flows from large "chimneys" hundreds of meters deep.

Antonio Maçanita is practically a wine prodigy. Everything he touches turns to gold. He's been named Portugal's best winemaker. He works in various wine regions, most notably the Douro . We have those wines too, of course.

In the Douro, he works with his sister Joanna. But he's also happy to make even more fantastic wines thousands of kilometers away in the middle of the ocean!
