Sometimes you discover wines that leave you speechless. The wines of Friedrich Schatz fall into that category. A German who makes Lemberger in Malaga. This German winemaker has settled in Serrania de Ronda, near Malaga. A beautiful mountainous nature reserve with a downright hot climate. But with cold nights. And it was here that Schatz planted some rather surprising grapes: Chardonnay. Pinot Noir. Petit Verdot. And, Lemberger aka Blaufränkisch. Local winemakers declared him loco , crazy. However, Schatz comes from a family that has been making wine since 1641...
Bizarrely elegant wines
So Friedrich Schatz wasn't crazy at all when he started making wine at Ronda. Because after extensive research he found 3 hectares at an altitude of 700m where the conditions were ideal for his wines. After even more research he knew which grape varieties would flourish there. And now there are Chardonnay, Pinot noir, Blaufränkisch and Petit Verdot. Lekker Sapje now imports the last two wines into the Netherlands. The Lemberger and the Petit Verdot are out of this world so beautiful. With only 13%, beautiful acids and layering, finesse and complexity. Unbelievable elegance, and that from such a hot area! Not cheap but worth every euro. Top sommelier Saskia Smeenk of star restaurant Daalder* in Amsterdam likes to work with it, among others.
