All wine guides praise Andi and Christoph Schneider from the Nahe.
KH Schneider Winery among the top in Germany
There are quite a few winemakers in the Nahe region named Schneider. So pay close attention to grandfather Schneider's initials: KH. The German wine guides for 2023 are full of praise, if not lyrical: names like Eichelmann, Vinum, Falstaff, Stuart Pigott . Grandsons Andi and Christoph, however, are the very embodiment of modesty: Christoph cultivates the vineyards and Andi "dedicates himself" to making wine. Their style: kick-ass Riesling, primarily. And, by the way, also beautiful Spätburgunders.
Grosses Gewächs: Felsenberg and Königfels near Schlossböckelheim
KH Schneider is fortunate to have plots in two of the most famous Lagen in the Nahe:
- Felsenberg and
-
Königfels .
The latter lay fallow for a long time but has been back in business for a few years. Both areas lie beneath the well-known wine village of Schlossböckelheim.
Even more GG Layers: Marbach and Domberg
While the Steillagen Felsenberg and Königfels are world-famous, the Nahe Lagen Domberg and Marbach, north of the town of Bad Sobernheim, are much less well-known. But here too, Andi and Christoph make superb Riesling wines at Grand Cru level, or Grosses Gewächs or GG in jargon. Next in line are the Roter Tonschiefer and Vulkanstein Rieslings . The Gutswein Riesling is also very beautiful. Especially for those who love "tight and exciting," this is Riesling par excellence!
The Nahe is a "geological nightmare" and boasts countless soil types. Therefore, you can't really speak of a single Nahe style when it comes to Nahe wines; the soil changes every 500 meters. And the Riesling grape perfectly reflects this difference in terroir. Andi and Christoph Schneider are masters at expressing these soil variations in their diverse Rieslings.
