All wine guides praise Andi and Christoph Schneider from the Nahe.
Winery KH Schneider among Germany's best
There are quite a few winemakers in the Nahe named Schneider. So pay close attention to the initials of grandfather Schneider: K.H. The German wine guides for 2023 are laudatory, if not lyrical: such as Eichelmann, Vinum, Falstaff, Stuart Pigott. Grandsons Andi and Christoph, however, are modesty personified; Christoph cultivates the vineyards and Andi 'takes care of' the winemaking. Their style: primarily kick-ass Riesling. And beautiful Spätburgunders too, by the way.
Grosses Gewächs: Felsenberg and Königfels at Schlossböckelheim
KH Schneider is fortunate to own plots in two of the most famous Lagen in the Nahe:
- Felsenberg and
-
Königfels.
The latter lay fallow for a long time but has been 'back in the running' for several years now. Both Lagen are located 'below' the well-known wine village of Schlossböckelheim.
More GG Lagen: Marbach and Domberg
While the steep slopes of Felsenberg and Königfels are world-famous, the Nahe Lagen Domberg and Marbach, north of the town of Bad Sobernheim, are much less known. But here too, Andi and Christoph produce magnificent Riesling wines of Grand Cru level, or Grosses Gewächs (GG) in jargon. Next in line are the Roter Tonschiefer and Vulkanstein Rieslings. Even the Gutswein Riesling is already very good. Especially for those who like 'sleek and exciting', this is Riesling at its best!
The Nahe is a 'geological nightmare' and has countless soil types. So, with Nahe wines, you cannot really speak of one Nahe style; every 500m the soil is different. And it is precisely the Riesling grape that perfectly reflects this difference in terroir. Andi and Christoph Schneider are masters at expressing these soil differences in their diverse Rieslings.
