Introducing Paul Humbrecht, biodynamic winemaker from Alsace
For years I've been searching for truly beautiful Alsace wines. The big names all have importers already — so who makes wines at the same level but is still available? At a trade fair I met a cheerful winemaker: Paul Humbrecht. And wow, what incredible wines!
Paul Humbrecht? Connoisseurs will immediately think of the famous Zind-Humbrecht estate in Alsace. And yes, they're family. Humbrecht is based in the charming village of Pfaffenheim. I tasted his wines including Pinot Gris, Riesling, Chasselas, Gewurztraminer (written without an umlaut in Alsace) and a lovely Crémant Extra Brut. And — surprisingly — a genuinely excellent Edelzwicker (a traditional blend)! Edelzwicker is usually a cheap, throwaway wine, but Humbrecht makes a truly great one.
Wines that age fantastically
What's remarkable is how beautifully these wines age. His 2012 Gewurztraminer Marie, for example, is still standing tall — fresh, full, fruity, a truly wonderful wine. The 2019 Chasselas is another surprise.
