Why Burgundy?
Burgundy is the holy grail for many wine lovers, but the region can be overwhelming. Hundreds of appellations, dozens of premiers and grands crus, and prices that swing in every direction. Yet, you don't have to be an expert to enjoy what is to be found here. We are here to help you get started.
Two main grapes, but also Aligoté and Gamay
This famous wine region works mainly with Chardonnay for white and Pinot Noir for red. But there are two other grapes that are worth knowing. Aligoté, a crisp white grape, and Gamay, the red grape of Beaujolais, an adjacent region that officially belongs to Burgundy. Everything you taste, from a simple Passetoutgrains to a Grand Cru Montrachet, tells the story of grape and terroir.
Start here as a beginner
Do you want to get acquainted without breaking the bank immediately? Then start with a Bourgogne Rouge or Bourgogne Blanc from a reliable producer. In our assortment, these are wines from Domaine Gauffroy Marc & Fils or Domaine Borgeot, both based in the Côte de Beaune and known for their honest, terroir-driven style.
Climbing the ladder: villages and premiers crus
Are you ready for more? Then move on to a village wine such as a Santenay or Meursault. These wines come from one specific village and already clearly show the character of their appellation. One level higher, you will find the premiers crus, vineyards with a special location that offer extra complexity and aging potential. The absolute top are the Grand Cru wines.
White or red?
Bourgogne Blanc (Chardonnay) is generally more accessible and affordable than Bourgogne Rouge (Pinot Noir) of a similar level. An excellent introduction to white is the Bourgogne Aligoté, the crisp, citrusy grape that is perfect as an aperitif (Kir royale) or with seafood.
For red in a lighter style, Gamay from the Beaujolais is also a perfect stepping stone. Passetoutgrains is a blend of Pinot Noir and Gamay and often a great and affordable starting point to explore these wines.
