A region apart
The Jura is one of France's smallest and most exceptional wine regions. It lies between Burgundy and Switzerland, on the slopes of the Jura Mountains. Here, winemakers craft distinctive wines that are produced nowhere else in the world. Unique grape varieties, idiosyncratic vinification techniques, and a pronounced terroir make this wine region a discovery for every wine enthusiast.
Unique grape varieties
Indigenous grape varieties grow here that you will hardly find elsewhere. For white: Savagnin (Traminer), the parent grape of many European white varieties, and Chardonnay in a mineral, oxidative style. For red: Trousseau, Poulsard (also known as Ploussard), and Pinot Noir. Each grape variety has a distinct character strongly shaped by the blue Lias clay soils and limestone of the region, dating back to the Jurassic period.
Vin Jaune: the gold of the Jura
The absolute signature wine is the exceptional Vin Jaune (yellow wine). Made from 100% Savagnin and aged under a layer of yeast (the *voile*) in old barrels for at least six years and three months. The result: a dry, nutty wine with notes of walnut, curry, and dried fruit that can age for decades. The bottle even has its own unique size: the 62cl *clavelin*.
Oxidative and ouillé styles
In addition to the oxidative Vin Jaune style, many producers also craft ouillé wines, where barrels are kept fully topped up to prevent oxidation. This produces fresher, more accessible styles, serving as the best proof that the Jura has two faces and offers something for everyone.
Small producers, great quality
At Lekker Sapje, we work closely with iconic wine producers such as Domaine A&M Tissot and Domaine Labet. Both stand for biodynamic farming, low yields, and a deep respect for the terroir. Their wines are a true reflection of what makes this wine region so unique.
However, Aviet and Dugois are also excellent winemakers. View our full collection and discover this extraordinary region.
