Portugieser, Storr, Rheinhessen

A light, supple red wine from Germany. Made from the Portugieser grape. Portugieser is similar to Pinot Noir but has a spicier flavor. It is quite light in color and also delicious chilled. Almost no tannins, so it's wonderfully smooth. This red wine comes from the Rheinhessen wine region in Germany. It's from the Storr winery.

The name Portugieser naturally raises questions. Did he originate in Portugal? Initially, it was thought not. He certainly arrived in Germany via Austria. In Austria itself, he is rarely seen anymore. Recent DNA research seems to indicate that he does indeed originate in Portugal.

Taste
Fruity nose: strawberry and cherry, spicy taste, pepper, fresh and light (12.5%). Resembles Pinot Noir. Also very tasty when chilled. Serve at 14-16 °C. Drink: now until 2024.

Delicious with
Hard cheeses, quail, pigeon, rabbit. Also goes well with (fried) fish due to the almost absent tannins.

Interesting
The origin of the Portugieser is not entirely clear. Via Austria, where it is mentioned in the 18th century, it was brought to Germany in the 19th century. There is (as yet) no known link with Portugal. Classic means that the wine is dry.
